I agree, I hate full auto pilot accounts, but I am guilty of Re-tweeting way too much of others material myself…

I just don’t feel like I have too much to say that adds value instead of just adding to the noise.

I hate when people who I KNOW have good information to share, or a good sense of humor, or who COULD be having good conversations in general, choose to run their accounts on full auto-pilot.

I can smell an auto-tweet a mile away, and I un-follow. Same goes for someone whose account is nothing but retweets of everyone else’s material.

i vehemently agree with the facebook status != twitter.

however, for my friends, i *do* like seeing their tweets about the trivial things they’re doing. it’s that sort of ambient presence that drew me to twitter in the first place.

I agree, this is a great way to engage others in the conversation.

Instead of saying, “I agree” or “Awesome movie” you can say, “I agree, slumdog millionaire was an awesome movie”

While auto DMs are most annoying, another is reading those nugget entries as you mentioned such as “LOL” or “Thanks.”

In an effort to involve my followers in a conversation (whether they want to be or not!), I try to repeat the question I was asked in my answer so at least others know what I’m tweeting about.

I don’t know, I sort of do care about the little details, what somebody had for lunch, or when they walked their dog, and although “Thanks” may not be Tweet-worthy, I do appreciate the gesture. It’s the minutia and details that make it interesting to me. I don’t know, maybe “I don’t get it”, but I imagine the experience is unique to the individual.

Good post. Twitter is for building relationships and engaging in two way communications. It is critical for people to understand that it takes time to begin to fully leverage the power of Twitter, and people often walk away before investing the required time.

I do think it is in the best interests of anyone engaged in business to dive into twitter and think about how it fits with the companies long term marketing strategy. The competition is, don’t fall behind.

I agree with all of it (though I am guilty of posting tweets about my lunch). I’m sick of explaining why I like Twitter to people who wont even log in.
